Abstract

This arts-based, critical analysis reconceptualizes the teaching and learning of history as an ongoing engagement that extends beyond classroom contexts and into urban landscapes and places of public pedagogy. The context of Manitobaâs 150th anniversary year inspires this analysis of one of the largest art installations in Canada, located at the site of Upper Fort Garry. The hidden curriculum within this significant site where MÃ©tis leader, Louis Riel, negotiated Manitobaâs entrance into Confederation reveals settler-colonial tensions and problematic omissions of MÃ©tis leadership and histories. In response, I draw upon a/r/tography and create pop-up soil installations as public provocations and as a new form of creative engagement with what it means to live on MÃ©tis homeland.
