Abstract

Embracing a womanist decolonial approach to autoethnography, I explore the hidden curriculum of conventional schooling found in a 25 year-old artefact—a self-authored book from a Grade 6 English project. Working with Pinar’s currere, I introduce a deschooled currere as a healing-centric praxis that addresses schoolish ways of knowing and being that fragment the identities and relations of educators, separating the educator from the learning process, as well as the those they wish to teach. Further, I reflect upon my own fragmented currere, which resulted from many years of exposure to the hidden curriculum embedded in my conventional schooling experience. Inquiring into the ways that this shaped my earliest experiences as a becoming teacher educator, I uncover a contrast with later experiences as an educator when I was able to more fully embody a deschooled currere.
