Chapter Summary

Learn the generic prefix conjugation paradigm of the strong verb thoroughly (i.e., the preformatives and sufformatives that designate person, gender, and number). The vowels of the third masculine singular of each stem (i.e., G, N, etc.) provide the rest of the vocalization for each form.

The G prefix conjugation has two principal classes: u-class and a-class [ARABIC TEXT].

The imperfective involves action that is viewed as incomplete by the speaker. The English future often gives a good sense.

The wÄw-retentive attached to the prefix conjugation consists of the conjunction [ARABIC TEXT] vocalized with a pataá¸¥ (instead of a shewa) and a dagesh forte in the following letter. The unit consisting of wÄw-retentive and prefix conjugation verb retains (hence the name) a more archaic verbal form that had the value of a perfective, and this unit functions in Classical Hebrew as a perfective.
