Abstract

First language (L1) attrition is a naturally occurring phenomenon, resulting from a reduction of L1 use and input, and in some contexts, the influence from a second language (L2). In the context of the Caribbean, there exists a rich diversity of Creole languages and European lexifiers, whose speakers often migrate from one territory to another usually in search of new economic opportunities. This results in a collision of these Creole languages and lexifiers which forms an environment in which language attrition may occur. L1 attrition in the Caribbean context however is an area in which minimal research is evident. This chapter focusses on a case study of language attrition within this context, where in Curaçao, the natively spoken Spanish-Portuguese Creole, Papiamentu is in contact with the languages of immigrants. This creates an environment of rich language diversity and accommodating of attrition effects. This phenomenon is highlighted in the speech of Jamaican Creole immigrants to Curaçao whose productions exhibit Papiamentu-based features evident in four constructions. An account is given for Papiamentu being the catalyst for noted deviations in the English-lexified Jamaican Creole, and conclusions are made regarding the stability of these features and the implication for L1 maintenance and L2 learning.
