Abstract

The current study employs quantitative comparative analysis to elucidate the combinatorial intricacies of using multiple languages in the same utterance. Speakers who engage in robust language mixing of Spanish, English and/or Belize Kriol are found to employ two major linguistic strategies: integration of single lexical items (nouns and verbs) and codeswitching (fluid alternation between languages within a sentence). Spanish speakers applied these strategies in the same fashion to both English and Kriol. The presence and role of Belize Kriol in this mixed discourse offers a novel view of a Creole language as an actor in producing outcomes in a contact situation rather than as an outcome itself. This finding also suggests that lower prestige languages are not categorically subject to pressures of higher prestige varieties.
