Abstract

This chapter compares and contrasts the theoretical basis of Colombian Caribbean studies with those pertaining to Caribbean studies conducted on other areas of the region. The objective is to discern possible analytical road maps from Caribbean studies through which the incipient academic production on the northern zone of Colombia can be strengthened. The foregoing is important to overcome the limitations of a nativist discourse on the Caribbean that responds to political interests within the academy. An examination of representative authors on the subject is made, and their postulates are studied in light of their ideological position within the field of literary criticism. We argue that criticism and literary work are vectors of social power, coadjutant of a symbolic and material domination that goes beyond the strict limits of the lyric or narrative act. In that sense, writing must be seen as a kind of creative tension that problematizes the place of writing in the world.
