Abstract

The concrete meanings of the legal category of ‘slave,’ who could and who could not be legally enslaved, and what it meant to be a ‘slave,’ or a ‘free person’ were issues always under dispute in Latin America. These issues arose in a context of contingent manumission and precariousness of freedom. Manumission in Latin America was often conditional or paid in installments. Moreover, ‘freedom’ often did not mean complete autonomy, rupture of dependency ties, or absence of compulsory labor. Dissemination of illegal enslavement practices was also a constant threat to people of color. Enslaved people however navigated this context and disputed the legal framework of in-between slavery and freedom statuses as well as the legal contours of life under slavery and freedom more generally.
