Abstract

This chapter shows that Andean norms for right and wrong cannot be understood without the benefit of their religio-political context. A hierarchy of officials doubled as judges to implement the will of the Sun as interpreted by the reigning king. Punishment for breaking the rules was usually swift and unforgiving. The efficacy of the system allowed the native chronicler Guaman Poma, perhaps with some exaggeration in his attempt to portray the Inca regime as superior to Spanish colonial rule, to write that the people were obedient to Inca righteousness. Consequently, he concluded that their system did not allow for conflicts nor lies nor thieves, only truth and good justice and law. What cannot be determined from this vantage point is the extent to which the commands and prohibitions of the Sun were put into practice and implemented.
