Abstract

This collective case study examines the journey of four teacher candidates’ experiences in a university partnership school where a university faculty member was their methods instructor, field supervisor, and partnered with the teacher in residence and other block instructor in an effort to provide students with a connected and deep experience in the school and community. The primary sources were an end of the semester reflective assignment and a focus group interview with the four participants. Using metaphoric analysis, I unveil the implicit metaphors of each of the four students in this journey. Findings include how the collective stories of these four teacher candidates can inform teacher educators to find ways to assist their teacher candidates by (1) making explicit the connections between course, fieldwork, and assignments, (2) valuing the importance of assisting teacher candidates in feeling a part of the school and neighborhood community, and (3) understanding the importance of guiding students from sympathy to empathy of students and communities.
