Abstract

How do individuals navigate spaces and roles to make large-scale clinical partnerships work? At a large urban research university, faculty worked to build the processes and practices that were required to manage a working relationship with one of the country’s largest school districts. After four consecutive semesters spending two days a week at one partnership school, one researcher finally began to feel like a part of the school community. How did she get there and why did it take so long? This chapter discusses the complicated nature of clinical partnerships and the “bartering” that was necessary to build a reciprocal relationship in which a university partner became a member of the school community.
