Abstract

In Platoâs dialogue Politikos there is an expression to be found which, in consideration of the social character of human existence and the discipline concerned with it, offers a striking alternative to the common term âpolitical scienceâ. The proposition is made to speak of the Î±Î½Î¸ÏÏÏÏÎ½ ÎºÎ¿Î¹Î½Î¿ÏÏÏÏÎ¹ÎºÎ· á¼ÏÎ¹ÏÏÎ®ÂµÎ· â the âscience of tending human beings unto communityâ.¹ By proceeding from this expression and in keeping it in mind, an exploration of the subject of prophecy in politics is in this article taken on. The formula, it is held, contains a method, namely the key for understanding why prophets and prophecies appear in Platoâs science of politics and why this happens at particular junctures in the elaboration of this science.
