Abstract

Eric Voegelinâs discovery of the symbolism of âhistoriogenesisâ in 1960 led to significant revisions in the philosophy of history that underlies the first three volumes of Order and History. In his study âHistoriogenesisâ he showed that âhistoryâ, understood as a sequence of meaningful events on a straight line of time, did not originate in Israel, but had already existed in the cosmological civilizations of the Ancient Near East. He therefore had to abandon his earlier assumption that cosmological civilizations could only have a cyclical conception of time. Furthermore, it became clear that âhistoryâ could no longer be understood as the meaningful course on a line of time, however the line might be conceived. Instead, a ânew formâ of a philosophy of history had to take in account the important lines of meaning in history that did not follow time-lines. These are found in the âmetaxyâ (In-Between), in the âflowing presenceâ between the divine sphere and the sphere of men, between eternity and time.

The new form of Voegelinâs philosophy of history also had to take into consideration the phenomenon of âequivalence of symbolic formsâ, a structure he also discovered during his work on the essay âHistoriogenesisâ. The discovery made it possible to subsume history-constituting events, such as the âcosmological mythâ, the Hellenic âphilosophyâ, and ârevelationâ, under general categories of order. Thus, it was not only the discovery of the historiogenetic symbolism that led Voegelin to the new form of his philosophy of history, but â probably even more importantly â it was the symbolism of the âflowing presence in metaxyâ and the development of the theory of âequivalenceâ.
