Abstract

The research on Eric Voegelins works is still challenged by the question, what was the reason, why the author broke with the conception, he had developed for âOrder and Historyâ in the Preface to Volume I of the series â the first three Volumes were issued in the years 1956/1957 â and why it took another seventeen years till Volume IV, âThe Ecumenic Ageâ reached publicity in the year 1974. Voegelin himself gives some hints of explanations in the Introduction of that volume, but no explicit reflection of his method or vindication of his Philosophy of History. Therefore, this article tries to make plausible, Eric Voegelins â by the evidences of his intellectual biography and by recollecting quotations of the scolars life-long preoccupation with the problem of History â unique attempt, to get rid of the problem any Philosophy of History has so far: The Unilinearity of its construction, its pretention of being a story told from the Beginning to the End of human affairs, its showing off of knowing exclusively the âcourseâ of world-history. In our times Philosophy of History has become unpopular in academic circles, but Voegelins Introduction of Volume IV of âOrder and Historyâ, the last book, that was issued at Voegelins lifetime, shows, how a critic of traditional or modern âGeschichtsphilosophienâ and meditative interpretation of paradigmatic classical texts can lead to a fresh philosophical approach to a philosophy in search of experiences beyond dogmatism or doctrinalization.
