Abstract

In “The Pauline Vision of the Resurrected,” Voegelin makes a number of controversial claims that are nonetheless essential to his project in Order and History and his philosophy as a whole. This paper argues that, despite the controversies, St. Paul is an ideal source text for Voegelin’s method. Voegelin values Paul’s theophanic experience for what he sees as an advance on certain aspects of Plato’s philosophy. At the same time, Voegelin diagnoses key problems in Paul’s self-interpretation of that theophany, which Voegelin argues have become deforming ‘constants’ in Western philosophical and political history. This paper argues that, by identifying and diagnosing these problems, Voegelin is attempting to reassert a vision of universal human reason that is more open to spiritual reality than totalizing religious or political movements would permit.
