Abstract

This article explores Eric Voegelinâs use of Classical philosophy in The Ecumenic Age, highlighting Voegelinâs remarkable mastery of ancient authors and his ability to draw significant parallels between their symbolic representations. Voegelinâs work seeks to construct a coherent and comprehensive image of humanity during what he terms the âecumenic age.â This paper examines two key aspects of Voegelinâs analysis of Classical philosophy from that period: the Stoic deformation of philosophy into doctrine, which entails the materialization of immaterial truths; and Voegelinâs interpretation of Anaximanderâs apeiron as a symbol of what Voegelin calls âthe tragic conception of historyâ. The analysis demonstrates how Voegelinâs identification of symbolic equivalences among different Classical philosophers can be fruitful in clarifying specific aspects of his philosophy of history and also in approaching to question of the unity of mankind.
