Advancement of insects as food and feed in a circular economy

The interest in insects as food and feed is growing exponentially. This is due to the insects being a high quality, efficient, and sustainable alternative protein source for both the food and feed sector. For that reason, the Journal of Insects as Food and Feed has published a special, open-access issue in August 2021. This issue is a follow up of the book Insects as food and feed: from production to consumption.

The special issue reviews many aspects related to insects for feed and food along the value chain. It covers aspects related to insect production including facility design, pest and disease problems, genetic improvement, using and treating all kind of substrates, the manipulation of insects’ nutritional values, the safety of substrates, and how to use substrate leftovers. The contribution of edible insects to the circular economy is discussed, entailing the impact of insect production and products on the environment. Benefits of insects on both human and animal health is discussed, as well as the suitability of insects as feed for fish, poultry, pigs, and pets. The food safety articles deal with microbial and chemical contaminants, allergenicity, and legislation. Processing technologies and the processing pathways for proteins, lipids, and chitin has been examined. Also, the kind of products containing insects has been reviewed as well as strategies to increase consumer acceptance. A topic included, but often not discussed, is the economic viability of the sector.

In all, the 30 articles cover all these issues and present the most recent developments. The lead authors are world leading in their field of expertise.

You can find the complete issue here.
