The contribution explores provisional measures in international human rights law with a particular focus on the jurisprudence of the three regional human rights courts: the European Court of Human Rights, the Inter-American Court of Human and the African Court of Human and Peoples’ Rights. It shows the tension governing provisional measures as means to respond to urgency in human rights law and the need to uphold their legitimacy and effectiveness. In so doing, the contribution addresses the features and objectives of provisional measures and analyses their multiple relations with time: on an abstract level as well as in case law. Ultimately, the elements of a – more normative – assessment framework are discussed.
