Abstract

The aim of this paper is to (1) present the conception of the paraphrase method which can be derived from Leszek Nowakâs philosophical works, and to (2) describe how Nowak used this method in order to extract philosophical concepts from literature (in this case from the work of Witold Gombrowicz). I argue that Nowakâs examination of Gombrowiczâs ideas had a big impact on his own social theory (i.e. the non-Christian Model of Man) since it resulted in creating an improved model, i.e. the Interhuman Model of Man. This model gives more accurate account of the human condition, and the relations between the individual and the society. I also argue that Nowakâs conception of the paraphrase method reveals its creative function (as opposed to the reductive function that this method often has in analytic philosophy).
