Abstract

In this paper, the author presents the Eva Etzioni-Halevyâs democratic elite theory and compare it with Leszek Nowakâs theory of power in non-Marxian historical materialism. In Nowakâs theory of power main mechanism of social development is political evolution through lost revolutions, in Halevyâs theory â through the mechanism of elite absorption. According to Eva Etzioni-Halevy, absorption of elites through cooptation of oppositional movementâs leaders into existing power structures leads primarily to the stabilization of democracy and consequently to desired political changes. In theory of power in non-Marxian historical materialism it is assumed that civil revolutions are always followed by repressive actions against the citizens. In order to incorporate Halevyâs mechanism of absorption of elites in the theoretical framework of non-Marxian historical materialism, the author enriches the conceptual apparatus of Nowakâs theory of power.
