Abstract

This essay presents some remarks on Leszek Nowakâs historiosophy, otherwise known as non-Marxian historical materialism. In the first part a very brief history of Polish analytical philosophy (inaugurated by Kazimierz Twardowski in 1895) is outlined, and the important place Nowak occupies in this tradition is highlighted. A very brief picture of the development of (post-)Marxian currents in the Western post-war philosophy is also presented; there are many interesting similarities and differences between these currents and Nowakâs ideas. The second part contains some critical remarks on Nowakian historiosophy. It should be stressed that this criticism assumes Nowakâs basic ideas as a paradigm of historiosophy. These critical remarks should thus be thus regarded as suggestions on how non-Marxian historical materialism could be developed further. These suggestions mainly concern the problem of the spatial dimension of historical process and some anthropological issues.
