EADS-astrium has been collaborating with French agronomic institutes, ARVALIS-Institut du VÃ©gÃ©tal and CETIOM, for many years to develop Farmstar, a commercial remote sensing service using space-based remote sensing and airborne images. It includes a full range of products, delivered on a field basis through the growing season, to answer farmersâ information needs for the management of wheat and rapeseed crops. This paper focuses on the products that are delivered for the nitrogen (N) fertilization management of wheat. The first step is the retrieval of biophysical and biochemical parameters of the crop canopy from reflectance data such as Green Leaf Area Index and chlorophyll content using a crop canopy reflectance model. These parameters are then linked to agronomic indicators such as N absorption of the crop in mid-February and the Nitrogen Nutrition Index. These agronomic indicators are then used as inputs for existing agronomic models that provide actual N fertilization recommendations.
