A study was carried out in Central Italy in order to investigate the causes of spatial variation in yield components in durum wheat. Soil properties, plant development and biomass, LAI and NDVI were measured following a grid sampling scheme. Yield components were assessed at harvest for the same points. The objective was to understand the effect of spatially variable water and nitrogen stress on yield components. The information gathered in this study contributes to the understanding of the complexity of possible variable rate nitrogen fertilisation strategies in a Mediterranean environment.
