A mechanical sensor, the Crop-meter, was used for measuring site specific crop biomass density under practical field conditions in winter wheat, winter barley, winter rye, triticale and grass in several regions of Germany in 2002 and 2003. In the first part of the paper, the frequency distributions of relative crop biomass density are presented and discussed. In the second part, based on these measurements, three statistical indices (coefficient of variation, mean deviation from the mean and range) are calculated and compared for describing the variability of plant populations. In the third part, five designed basic scenarios are presented and discussed for the application of agrochemicals (nitrogen fertilisers, growth regulators and fungicides). Taking into account the real measured crop biomass density distributions, the potential savings are calculated for application scenarios.
