This review evaluates research between 1995 and 2024 on the economics of site-specific weed management, analysing 25 studies with a focus on methodologies, reported benefits and cost considerations. Although many early studies reported the economic potential, technology or management costs were often omitted or underestimated. Recent research, considering advancements in site-specific weeding, has shown the ability to further increase the economic benefits, yet they remain limited when all the costs are factored in. Although still largely hypothetical, environmental benefits could come to the fore as the primary driver for the competitiveness of this technology over broadcast applications.
