The study aimed to accurately diagnose the water status of winter wheat during the reproductive growth period using the allometric relationship between ear-saturated water accumulation (SWA_E) and ear dry mass (EDM). The ear water diagnosis index (WDI) was calculated as the ratio of the actual SWA_E to the critical SWAE under the same EDM. Critical SWA_E curves were developed for sub-optimal (N1) and optimal (N2) nitrogen conditions (N1: SWA_E=3.53EDM^0.48; N2: SWA_E=4.53EDM^0.47). The indirect soil nitrogen deficiency, the reduction of grain number per ear and the advance of grain filling caused by water stress were the main factors contributing to the decrease in ear WDI.
