Weeds affect crop profitability by reducing yield and quality while increasing management costs. Weed technologies primarily focus on immediate herbicide treatment, often neglecting weed ecology or non-herbicidal control, leading to high costs and herbicide resistance. A multidisciplinary project involving major institutions in Australia was launched in 2024 to build technologies enabling growers to move beyond reactive weed management. It combines geospatial weed maps, remote/ proximal sensing imagery, field data and plant biology in a spatial biological model to predict “likely” future weed infestations. This approach empowers growers with sustainable weed control solutions, balancing immediate weed suppression with seedbank management.
