We schoolmasters must temper discretion with deceit. (Dr Fagan in ‘Decline and Fall’, by Waugh, 2001) Do you agree with Dr Fagan? I doubt that many vocationally-orientated teachers ever would. Why is that? This book concerns the practice of teaching. It describes the importance of reflection, practised communication and skilled relationshipbuilding, within and between educational settings and others locally, nationally and internationally. This chapter suggests that such activities are essentially ethical – that it is not possible to offer the inspiration and guidance that practitioners expect of themselves without such engagement. The argument that follows reflects results of an assessment of five key UK professions (including teaching) carried out in 2015.
