In this chapter a study is presented that focused on the relation of instructional quality to studentsâ emotions. A research design was applied that combined qualitative and quantitative methods to show the benefit of a mixed method approach.

In the course of international educational studies like TIMSS and PISA the quality of schools and instruction became an important topic in the discussion between educators, researchers, and policymakers. Most of the studies conducted in the last years focused on the effectiveness of instruction. To measure the effectiveness of instruction mainly studentsâ achievement and knowledge as the cognitive âoutputâ was proven. The second central output of instruction playing a crucial role for motivation to learn and for life long learning was widely neglected, namely studentsâ emotions. But nowadays, numerous studies point to the key-role of emotional factors as constituting elements of the learning process, next to and in close interaction with motivational and cognitive factors. Methodologically, quantitative studies still dominate in this research field.

Therefore, the presented study applied not only quantitative methods but also qualitative ones, such as semi-structured interviews and diary logs. In total, 931 students from 36 classrooms participated in this study, 68 students from this sample were also interviewed. Main results of the study are presented and implications are discussed in terms of a fruitful combination of qualitative and quantitative methods.
