This chapter examines the current knowledge about the relationships among extreme weather events and vector-borne diseases. Specifically we examine the role of flooding, hurricanes/typhoons, drought and wind on diseases such as malaria, dengue, tick-borne diseases and others. There is well-established evidence that many of these events precipitate changes in the vector population but there is less evidence that they are associated with overall increases in the disease burden itself. Furthermore, the degree and direction of influence can also vary by location and disease. The complex disease ecologies, which includes coupling of natural and human systems, makes prediction of disease incidence problematic and probably explains some of the difficulty establishing empirical connections between extreme weather and vector-borne disease. Climate change projections suggest that extreme weather events will become more common towards the end of the century and in some regions are already on the rise. Determining the circumstances when vector-borne disease increases are most probable following extreme weather events is important to disaster planning and preparedness efforts. Most concerning is that areas where vulnerability is the highest tend to lack the resources and infrastructure to combat the disease. This is especially true after a severe weather event. Given the paucity of the literature to guide these efforts, development of infrastructure in areas where vector-borne diseases are already common is likely to provide the most benefit to communities.
