Hurricane Katrina, which made landfall on the Gulf Coast of the United States on 29 August 2005, produced an estimated storm surge of 3.0-3.5 m near New Orleans. Subsequent failure of the New Orleans levee system flooded over 80% of the city of New Orleans, making Katrina one of the deadliest and costliest natural disasters in the history of the United States. This paper discusses water quality problems associated with floodwater, surface water, groundwater, and drinking water in the wake of the hurricane and the implications of these problems with respect to environmental and public health. The paper provides comprehensive and detailed information about the impact of this catastrophic hurricane on water quality in the greater New Orleans area in the weeks and months following Hurricane Katrina.
