Volcanoes rank along with all the other major natural disasters in having the capability of unexpected catastrophic activity causing major loss of life and destruction of property. In recent times the authorities and the people most at risk have been much better prepared to handle the catastrophic types of historic explosions like Vesuvius in AD 79, Tambora in 1815 and Krakatoa in 1883. The development of modern technology and highly sophisticated equipment has enabled volcanologists to keep dangerous volcanoes under very close surveillance. Scientists can now make accurate predictions as well as ensuring that appropriate and adequate emergency measures are put in place. Millions of people live under or very close to well-known volcanoes. This is especially true of the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’ but also to several other ‘hot spots’ around the world. These hardy people till the soil, mine the minerals, use the aggregates, escort the tourists and live under constant threat of disaster. Sometimes they may be a little slow in responding to the warnings and this is when the tragedies occur as with Nevada del Ruiz in Colombia in 1985. Quicker responses as with Merapi in Indonesia in 2000 resulted in much lower casualties. In most parts of the world where volcanoes are really dangerous, well trained and equipped Disaster Management Teams are on constant alert and availability to deal with a sudden threat. These arrangements have resulted in the saving of many lives in more recent times.
