The alpaca is the most important fibre-producing member of the South American camelids. Although camelids are adapted to the highland environment of the Altiplano, their introduction in some other regions of the world have been successful. Alpacas were brought in the United States prior to 1980, but were confined mostly to zoo and zoological parks. Since the first importation from Chile in 1984, purchase and breeding alpacas in the US have flourished, and since then have been distributed in every state of the US from Alaska to Arizona and California to the Carolinas, creating a sizable specialty livestock and fibre production industry. There are an estimated 300,000 camelids in North America. The alpaca owners & breeders association (AOBA) was organised in 1987 to serve and coordinate the alpaca industry developments. The AOBA provide a number of services to members and producers including an alpaca magazine, website, newsletters, investment information, scientific literatures, fibre education, alpaca shows and sales. Currently, AOBA has more than 4,000 members and registered 171,316 alpacas at the Alpaca Registry Inc (ARI) from 1986 to 2010. The Alpaca Fiber Cooperative of North America (AFCNA) is a society of more than 1000 alpaca producers who collect, process and market alpaca fibre products for the members. In 1997, the AOBA established the Alpaca Research Foundation (ARF) to support camelid research, which benefits the North American alpaca industry, primarily in the areas of alpaca health, husbandry, genetics and fibre.
