Objective measurement of alpaca coat colour is now an integral part of the process of showing, breeding, marketing and classing of alpacas. The aim of this study was to test the capacity of the CIELab Colourimetric System to differentiate between coat colour classes defined by official patterns in alpacas. These classes were defined regarding to different pre-established subjective patterns (British and Australian official patterns, the ICAR pattern proposal) and the colour estimated by the researcher in the field), and compared with quantitative colourimetric measurements according to a standardised international procedure. A total of 231 alpacas from Suri (24%) and Huacaya (76%) breeds, were measured at shoulder, ribs and croup for colourimetric parameters and classified according to these four colour patterns. The discriminant analysis showed that, while black and white colours were the best assigned coats by observation (at 94.7% and 92.2%, respectively), the colourimeter assigned more coats to these patterns than those identified by observation (30 and 74 assigned by colourimeter, over 19 and 64 identified, for black and white coat colours, respectively).
