Substantial literature exists evaluating the relative profitability of variable-rate technology (VRT) versus uniform-rate technology (URT) for applying a single input to fields with multiple management zones. The objective of this paper is to present an analytical framework for addressing the VRT versus URT decision in the more realistic situation where farmers apply multiple inputs to fields with multiple management zones. The decision-making framework is presented and applied to the case of producing irrigated cotton with nitrogen and water inputs in fields containing three management zones of varying proportions.
