The choice of interpolation methods for creating yieldmaps from data collected with yield monitors has been thoroughly discussed. Inverse distance to a power is a very common approach. It is used by scientists as well as farm managers and has been implemented into a wide range of yield mapping software. Statisticians consider kriging to be superior to inverse distance to a power being more robust and accounting for the errors inherent in the estimation. However, processing data with kriging requires profound knowledge and is sensitive to correct modelling.

Previous investigations have revealed that yield data contains erroneous measurements due to the harsh environment that the sensors operate in. Magnitude and frequency of the errors depends on the model of the yield monitoring system. Despite the smoothing effect of interpolation methods, erroneous data affects the quality of resulting yield maps.

An investigation of yield maps, created using inverse distance to a power and kriging from filtered and raw yield data was carried out. Data were collected by different yield measurement systems. The analysis showed that the influence of the interpolation method on yield maps was substantially lower than the influence of the yield monitoring system and the effect of filtering
