The adoption of new precision technologies for fertiliser spreading is gaining momentum in New Zealand. Spreader testing protocols are needed to ensure that machines can accurately perform under variable rate control. These tests also need to be made easier so performance levels can be checked on a regular basis. A review of available spreader tests throughout the world showed varying results. Measurement systems requiring a mathematical algorithm to calculate the landing position of individual particles, though inaccurate, were quick interpolators. Currently, the New Zealand Quality assurance program for fertiliser spreaders, âSpreadmarkâ, uses the tray collection method to assess distribution performance. This method is accurate in producing distribution pattern results. However, it is a laborious task especially when analysing multiple spread patterns for variable rate application. An image processing method was developed that provided quick analysis and interpretation of spread pattern data. This method allowed rapid measurement of a number of particle properties with a detection accuracy of greater than 99%. The method allowed greater amounts of information to be collected with less effort, potentially providing a better means of understanding spreader performance. The image processing method was field tested to measure the distribution performance of a twin disc spreader at 80, 100 and 150 kg ha^-1 of Urea (46% Nitrogen). These data were then used to assess the ability to perform variable rate application in the field. Results showed that variable rate application is achievable with current spreaders if the spread pattern variation is minimised. Application zone size and shape was also found to significantly affect application accuracy due to spread pattern overlap.
