The automation of agricultural vehicles that perform hazardous and repetitive tasks, which are currently carried out by human operators under all weather conditions and high noise levels, still remains a challenge for field robotics. The automation of tractor navigation and spraying machinery for selective distribution of pesticides will greatly reduce risks to environment and humans. The integration of sensors, actuators, processors and communication systems allows replacement of manual operations by automatic functions in teleoperation and autonomous navigation of a tractor. In addition, real time perception of the environment using appropriate sensors is necessary to ensure safety in environments where operators and vehicles work together. Our goal is a higher degree of autonomy in agricultural machinery and vehicles. Some results are presented to show the impact of the new wireless communication technologies on the automation of many tedious, repetitive, low speed and risky agricultural operations.
