The dry bulk density (Ï_d) as an indicator of soil compaction was measured on-the-go by means of a compaction sensor system that comprised several sensors for measurement of draught (D) of a soil cutting tool (subsoiler), depth (d) and moisture content (w). A hybrid numerical-statistical model developed in a previous study was used to calculate bulk density.

The bulk density maps measured with core sampling and on-the-go methods were similar, with a determination coefficient (R²) and standard error of 0.57 and 0.054 Mg m^-3, respectively. About 72 % of the errors were less than 0.05 Mg m^-3 in absolute values. Measurement under very dry conditions can lead to a larger error and, hence, compacted zones in dry conditions cannot be detected correctly.
