The objective of this study was to determine the necessary soil loosening depth along a 600-m transect to eliminate zones with soil strengths (measured as cone index, CI) exceeding 4 and 5 MPa respectively down to a depth of 0.6 m. The transect was located at a site situated in a glacial drift area and was characterised by sandy deposits overlying boulder clay. A tractor-mounted multi-penetrometer array consisting of four hydraulic driven single penetrometers was used to determine soil strength at 1 m sampling intervals. The spatial fluctuation in soil strength along the transect of the measured CI was shown as repeatedly averaged readings. Averaged cone index values over 5 m intervals for selected depths were used to determine the needed soil loosening depth. By use of semivariance models, a maximum tolerable sampling interval up to 20 m was determined to obtain the loosening depth under the conditions investigated.
