Since there are no sensor-based technologies on the market for automatic disease detection, plant growth parameters might be used to optimise fungicide application. In rape, plant protection agents are often sprayed to regulate growth and control fungal diseases, especially in autumn and spring. Initial investigations were performed in these two seasons using camera vision to detect the coverage level in a heterogeneous winter rape field. Sampling points were chosen according to different growth stages to test whether the coverage level detected by the camera represented the green biomass sufficiently. Any weed plants were excluded automatically. In the experiments, the coverage level detected by camera correlated in a strongly linear fashion with the fresh and dry matter in the autumn and spring. In spring, the whole field of rape was scanned to evaluate the spatial distribution of the coverage level.
