The optimum wavelength combination for estimating the nitrogen uptake by active spectral reflectance measurements has been determined. For this purpose, winter wheat plots with known nitrogen uptake were illuminated with a halogen lamp and the resulting reflectance was measured with a diode-array spectrometer (400-1000 nm) at an oblique view. All possible two-channel ratio vegetation indices were correlated to the nitrogen uptake and ranked according to the coefficient of determination. The best relationships were retrieved with one waveband in the NIR and one waveband close to the infrared reflectance shoulder of canopy reflectance (i. e. â¥ 760 nm and around 730-750 nm)
