The use of Automatic Milking Systems (AMS) requires a change as well as progress in the management strategies of dairy farming. This applies in particular to the recognition of the contamination in relevant parts of such systems, because the farmer used to control the milking only in a random sampling way.

With the help of image processing it is possible to analyze changes in the degree of pollution of the surface. Relations between measurable contamination and the germ load can be analyzed. The investigation should be regarded as a first attempt to measure contamination of the external surface of the AMS.

This is important for the stabilization of the herd’s health. Furthermore this should be seen as a step to a more consumer orientated production.
