The aim of the project was to evaluate electronic identification (EI) in a northern winter climate characterized by low temperatures down to -50 °C and rapid and frequent fluctuations (+5 °C to - 25 °C). The work was based on the I.D.E.A. project (IDentification Electronique des Animaux: basis for the future implementation of the Electronic Identification System in livestock of the European Union) of EU (Joint Research Centre, Ispra, Italy). I.D.E.A. suggests requirements that might be inadequate in northern climate. The project gave information on the actual operating conditions especially as regards animals kept in uninsulated loose housing. The results enhance JRC´s work in defining test procedures and standards. They also give authorities, slaughterhouses and farmers indications of the possible new requirements for production conditions and buildings.
