Abstract

Until the end of the twentieth century, the sixteenth-century Spanish Dominican friar and chair of theology at the University of Salamanca, Francisco de Vitoria, and the twentieth-century German jsurist and political theorist Carl Schmitt were the embodiments of two almost opposite paradigms in international law. This chapter navigates the contributions of authors from different academic traditions, namely those of international law, history, political science, cultural studies, and philosophy to the present volume and explains how they serve its overarching purposes by providing much-welcomed nuance, contextualization, and breadth to the SchmittâVitoria nexus in the history and theory of international law.
