Abstract

This chapter is a reflection on the dual challenges of COVID-19 and bereavement I experienced in the context of pursuing my doctoral education. Through an autoethnographic approach, I explore the intersection of these two catastrophes and how they impacted both my academic and personal life. I argue that the unique challenges posed by these crises on doctoral students have not been adequately researched, and that an autoethnographic approach can offer valuable insights into how individuals navigate these challenges. Using the Social Cognitive Theory of Self-Regulation by Albert Bandura, I reflect on how I developed and utilised self-regulatory skills to overcome challenges and build resilience during this difficult time. Through personal narrative and reflection, I illustrate the challenges and opportunities of navigating a PhD journey amidst the pandemic and grief, highlighting themes such as isolation, resilience, and self-care. The study offers insights into my lived experiences as a PhD student during these unprecedented times, as well as the implications for academia and graduate education. It also provides a framework for understanding the impact of personal loss and global crises on academic pursuits, and for those who will also go through the same challenges of pursuing a PhD while dealing with personal loss.
