Abstract

Joint doctoral degrees represent an innovative approach to fostering cross-border education and promoting international collaboration among academic institutions (Chan, 2022). In recent years, the scope, volume, and intricacy of international activities at numerous institutions have expanded significantly (Tulvatana & Thongtan, 2021). Joint doctoral degrees serve as a means to unite institutions, offering PhD students, collaborating institutions, and supervisors enriched and more fulfilling learning opportunities. This chapter leverages my unique experience as a case study of an interdisciplinary joint doctoral program between the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa and the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. It examines the importance of joint doctoral degrees in facilitating international exposure and collaboration, nurturing intercultural awareness and knowledge, and addressing the associated opportunities and challenges. Undertaking a PhD is an arduous task in itself; pursuing a joint doctoral degree necessitates mental preparedness to meet the diverse expectations and requirements of both participating institutions. Individuals may navigate their joint doctoral trajectory in various ways.
