Abstract

This chapter presents the resilience and achievements of doctoral students who obtained their doctoral degrees despite the trauma caused by war and conflict in their region. The destruction caused by war and conflict on infrastructure, public health, social order, and education causes a long-lasting negative impact on the lives of people. Their lives are turned upside down by the ruins of war, losing their loved ones, their homes, and belongings. The bleak picture that has been painted above has persuaded us to document the struggles, resilience, and achievements of our doctoral students who defied the odds and obtained their doctoral degrees while their region was engulfed by war. We attempt to gain a greater understanding of the reasons behind their resilience, tenacity, and zeal. We believe the lesson learned will be a guide and encouragement to many students to come.
