The PhD journey can be an arduous task if the student works in the absence of cardinal support structures. Since my PhD study was one of action research, reflecting on the study itself and my experiences along the way was an important contributor. Therefore, my autobiographical narrative provides insight into support structures that served as anchors for success in my PhD and post-PhD journeys. Findings reveal that the PhD journey is molded by a range of structures, not limited to the academic position, such as emotional, financial, and spiritual influences. There has been little research on support systems that PhD candidates perceive to be imperative along the journey, therefore, it is important to understand how various structures, such as friends, family, supervisors, funding, and PhD candidates’ intrinsic motivation and religious beliefs work in synergy to sustain motivation and provide a holistically favourable environment. An important aim, as a post-PhD individual and academic, is to share my narrative with PhD candidates who can use it in the therapeutic sense making them feel part of a community, resulting in this chapter forming part of existing support structures.
