Abstract

This chapter explores the application of Plutchikâs Theory of Emotions in fine-grained sentiment analysis, comparing qualitative outcomes between manual and AI-driven approaches. Emotions play a critical role in education, influencing cognitive functions such as memory, attention, and reasoning, which in turn shape studentsâ academic experiences and outcomes. While traditional methods of emotion analysis, such as teacher observations and self-reports, are rich in context, they are often subjective and inconsistent. Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) offer promising tools for emotion detection, yet they raise ethical concerns and may lack the depth of human interpretation. This research evaluates the strengths and limitations of both manual and AI-based emotion analysis, using Plutchikâs Wheel of Emotions as a framework. The chapter analyzes 100 quotes related to life themes, employing both manual and AI-driven methods to detect emotions. Findings reveal that while AI tools like ChatGPT can identify emotional markers, they often misclassify complex emotions due to contextual and cultural nuances. The chapter concludes that integrating both manual and machine-driven approaches may provide a more comprehensive understanding of emotions in educational settings, balancing human insight with technological precision.
