Abstract

This chapter introduces the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). It commences by exploring the complex concept of intelligence, paving the way for understanding AI’s pursuit of imitating human cognitive abilities. The chapter then discusses different definitions of AI, scrutinising the philosophical underpinnings that have shaped its development and the ongoing debates surrounding its nature. A historical overview traces the genesis and evolution of AI, from its early beginnings to its present state. The chapter highlights some of its applications across several domains. Furthermore, it addresses the key challenges facing AI because of its disrupting nature, including ethical considerations, potential biases, and the implications of increasing automation. Finally, the chapter explores the vast opportunities that AI presents for innovation, problem-solving, and societal advancement, emphasizing the importance of responsible development and deployment as enacted in the “AI Action Summit, Feb 10–11, 2025” held lately in Paris. This chapter aims to be a companion for whoever is interested in the field with no prior specialised education.
